West Attica refers to the western outskirts of the metropolitan area of Athens, Greece, which are characterized by significant contradictions and conflicts.
The region exhibits extremely low population density and distinct socio-economic features stemming from its historical industrialization and de-industrialization. Its contradictory economic activities, including an industrial zone, logistics services, and informal economic sector, coupled with long-standing environmental degradation, create a spatial entity with low civic cohesion and considerable environmental vulnerabilities. Furthermore, the Regional Climate Change Adaptation Plan of the Region of Attica, recently published, identifies West Attica as highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
To address these long-standing environmental, social, and economic inequalities, the Fairville partner, COMMONSPACE, will collaborate with the associated partner, Region of Attica, in a co-production process to map, understand, analyse, and tackle these issues. This process will involve engagement with local urban authorities in the area, local citizens’ initiatives, and the public through participatory workshops. The objective is to propose social, spatial, and environmental transformations towards a more just, democratic, and sustainable everyday life in West Attica.
The desired outcome of this co-production process is the development of a local sustainability plan and sustainability policies for West Attica. These policies will serve to address the long-term social, environmental, and economic inequalities in the region and promote sustainable development.

COMMONSPACE is a collaborative – interdisciplinary planning and design group, operating from 2012, and established in 2015 as a Social Enterprise (Employees’ Cooperative). Provides high quality services in the fields of Spatial Strategies, Architecture, Social Research, Urban and Environmental Design by creating or implementing innovative tools and processes. It seeks to be a link between citizens, social institutions, and public authorities, a hub for the exchange of knowledge, ideas and practices among citizens, experts and decision-makers. The wide range of commonspace’s members and associates create a network of experts and scientists involved in Urban and Spatial planning and Environmental Management, combining research work and study projects.
The Region of Attica is a second level local government organisation, governing the wider area of the Athens metropolis. It consists of eight Regional Divisions: Central Athens, Southern Athens, Northern Athens, Western Athens, Piraeus, Saronic Islands, Western Attica and Eastern Attica. The Attica region consists of around 4 million citizens and is organised as a metropolitan region. The organisation plans and implements policies at regional level within its jurisdiction, in compliance with the principles of sustainable development and social cohesion of the Greek state. The Region of Attica is responsible for implementing strategic plans and for detailing the guidelines of environmental policies at regional level.
Το εργαστήριο του Fairville στη Δυτική Αττική
Ως Δυτική Αττική γνωρίζουμε τις δυτικές παρυφές της μητροπολιτικής περιοχής της Αττικής. Η περιοχή παρουσιάζει εξαιρετικά χαμηλή πληθυσμιακή πυκνότητα και ιδιαίτερα κοινωνικοοικονομικά χαρακτηριστικά που απορρέουν από τους ιστορικούς κύκλους εκβιομηχάνισης και αποβιομηχάνισής της. Στις πολλαπλές και αντιφατικές οικονομικές δραστηριότητες της Δυτικής Αττικής συγκαταλέγονται οι βιομηχανικές δραστηριότητες, οι μεταφορικές υπηρεσίες και υπηρεσίες logistics, η διαχείριση απορριμμάτων ευρείας κλίμακας, ο αγροτικός τομέας και οι άτυπες οικονομικές δραστηριότητες. Τα παραπάνω στοιχεία σε συνδυασμό με τα μακροχρόνια περιβαλλοντικά προβλήματα, δημιουργούν μια χωρική οντότητα με χαμηλή αστική συνοχή και σημαντική περιβαλλοντική υποβάθμιση.
Στο πλαίσιο του FAIRVILLE, η COMMONSPACE θα συνεργαστεί με την Περιφέρεια Αττικής για την ανάπτυξη εργαστηρίων συμπαραγωγής με τους κατοίκους και τους φορείς της περιοχής για τη χαρτογράφηση, κατανόηση, ανάλυση και αντιμετώπιση αυτών των κοινωνικών, οικονομικών και περιβαλλοντικών ζητημάτων. Το τελικό αποτέλεσμα θα είναι η ανάπτυξης ενός τοπικού σχεδίου βιώσιμης ανάπτυξης για τη Δυτική Αττικήμαζί με τους κατοίκους και τους φορείς της περιοχής.
